jin aun n i were chatting yesterday bout his new posting in Seremban - Paediatrics.
He started this posting 2 weeks ago..n this smart fella here have not clerked any cases yet...u kno wat he said " i jus go to the ward everyday n play with the kids...got one 8 yr old boy very cutteee.." *sweatz..*
This 8 yr old boy that he's talking about was admitted into the hospital with pneumonia...and he has a disease called the
Ondine's Curse...ain't the name scary??
yup..not ony the name is scary...the disease itself is scary too..
respiratory arrest during sleep....means...the person stops breathing when he sleeps....
OMG!!!
super scary man...so i went to look into Wikipedia bout this disease...
Ondine's Curse is also known as Congenital Central Hypoventilation Syndrome or
primary alveolar hypoventilation
This very rare and serious form of Central
Sleep Apnea involves an inborn failure of autonomic control of breathing.
About 1 in 200,000 live born children have the condition. In 2006, there were only about 200 known cases worldwide.
Super Rare!! Patients generally require tracheotomies and lifetime mechanical ventilation on a respirator in order to survive.
So the boy has a tube connected to his trachea which is attached to a mechanical ventilator...the tube has to be there 24 hrs...n every morning, his mum will have to clean the tube for him..
*note: very exposed to infections..*u kno where it got its name?? It's from a myth of Ondine (an immortal water spirit). these water spirits were said to be able to gain a soul by marrying a human and bearing his child.
Ondine fell in love with a dashing
knight - Sir Lawrence - and they were married.

a picture of Ondine
When they exchanged vows, Sir Lawrence said,
"My every waking breath shall be my pledge of love and faithfulness to you." A year after their marriage Ondine gave birth to Lawrence’s son. From that moment on she began to age. As Ondine’s physical attractiveness diminished, Lawrence lost interest in his wife.
One day, Ondine saw her husband lying in the arms of another woman.
She uttered a curse:
"You swore faithfulness to me with every waking breath, and I accepted your oath. So be it. As long as you are awake, you shall have your breath, but should you ever fall asleep, then that breath will be taken from you and you will die!"
BUT....of course...it's just a myth....
the real cause of this disease is a mutation in a gene which plays a role in the development of the autonomic nervous system. This system obviously regulates your breathing when you're sleeping....
or it could be a result from severe brain or spinal trauma (such as after an
automobile accident, or an error made during
neurosurgery).
prognosis: Most people with congenital Ondine's curse do not survive infancy....
my prayers go all out to tht little boy...I pray that he'll be the one in a million who will survive this terrible disease...n he'll get to live to see more of this beautiful world...
